Fossil of the Year

Exceptional fossils deserve special attention. For this reason, the Paläontologische Gesellschaft annually awards the title Fossil of the Year to an important fossil species.

Fossils are unique testimonies to the evolution of life on our planet. They provide evidence of environmental changes and conditions over long time spans. They vividly show how the current diversity of organisms emerged throughout evolution and document forms of life that no longer exist.

Fossils have a great practical benefit, in the exploration of raw materials or in climate research, but they are always important objects for scientific insight. Some fossils are spectacular museum pieces that impress the beholder with their unusual form, their preservation, their size, or their aesthetic appeal.
