A session with the title The Rise of Complex Multicellular Life and Ecologies and Their Role in the Past and Present Earth System will be held at the Goldschmidt2019. Gordon Love (University of California, Riverside) will present the keynote lecture. The conference will take place in Barcelona August 18-23. The Rise of Complex Multicellular Life and Ecologies and Their Role in the Past and Present Earth System (Session 7g)

Significant radiations in complex, multicellular life—foremost, the emergence and diversification of metazoans and metazoan-style ecologies—occurred during the Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic eras. This diversification occurred against a backdrop of profound environmental change, and the mutual evolution of multicellular organisms and the environments they inhabited are considered to have played a key role in the establishment of the modern Earth system. This session seeks to explore the factors shaping not only the appearance of early complex life, but also the emergence and importance of ‘engineering’ behaviors integral to modern ecosystems and environments, such as filter feeding, bioturbation, biomineralization and predation.
